A CBCT image is taken to evaluate the anatomy and quality of the hard tissue. In addition, intraoral digital impressions were captured to give us quick and accurate 3D models of the oral hard and soft tissue surfaces, providing additional information to plan bone grafting and future implant surgery. The combination of Planmeca’s CBCT units and intraoral scanners tied together with the digital capability of the Planmeca Romexis® 6 software allows us to plan and complete difficult implant cases with relative ease.
Next, we designed a digital crown fully aligned with the patient’s occlusion and esthetics using Planmeca PlanCAD® Easy. It is part of the Romexis software and is efficient to use, allowing a full prosthetically-driven implant planning workflow.
The Romexis software conveniently integrates the patient’s digital information within their electronic patient chart. We can merge CBCT images and digital impressions easily to create a 3D virtual patient that can be used for analysis and treatment planning purposes. With this information, we can visualise the bone anatomy, intraoral hard and soft tissues as well as prosthetic design in combination – all tied together by the Romexis software.
In this combined 3D format, we can plan the optimal implant position based on the patient’s anatomy and the ideal future prosthetic design. Planmeca’s open library includes implants and surgical sleeves from a vast array of manufacturers.
After planning the implant, we can use the Romexis implant guide module to design the 3D surgical guide. The guide is easy to manufacture in-house with a 3D printer, such as Planmeca Creo® C5, which guarantees a smooth and straightforward printing experience. If we want to collaborate with a partner, the guide design can be exported as an open STL file with just a few clicks.
The implant was placed through the surgical guide, and we can be confident that the position is perfect, which takes the stress out of cases that are otherwise challenging. Thanks to the initial CBCT image and intraoral scans, all brought together by Romexis, we were able to complete the treatment without any surprises.
We found that digital implant planning and fabrication of surgical guides not only helps improve surgical outcomes, but also improves our ability to diagnose and treatment plan, as well as improve the experience for our patients.
Success in this implant case required four critical components: high quality CBCT imaging, preliminary prosthetic planning, digital implant planning, and guided implant surgery. Planmeca’s combination of hardware and software creates a unified solution that helps us achieve our clinical goals better than with other systems where these capabilities may not exist under one streamlined platform.”
